Waiting for a Hare to Turn up

One day in ancient times, a peasant was working in his field. A hare dashed up, unfortunately knocked against a tree in the field and fell dead with its neck broken. Then the peasant put down his hoe and waited by the tree for another hare to turn up. No more hares appeared, however, but he became the laughing-stock of the land.

《韩非子•五蠹》：“ 宋 人有耕田者，田中有株，
《hán fēi zǐ •wǔ dù 》：“ sòng rén yǒu gēng tián zhě ，tián zhōng yǒu zhū ，

兔走，触柱折颈而死，因释其耒而守株，冀復得
tù zǒu ，chù zhù shé jǐng ér sǐ ，yīn shì qí lěi ér shǒu zhū ，jì fù dé

兔，兔不可復得，而身为宋国 笑。今欲以先王之

株：露出地面的树根。
zhū ：lù chū dì miàn de shù gēn 。

耒(lěi): 1)古代称犁上的木把
lěi (li i): 1)gǔ dài chēng lí shàng de mù bà
2)古代指耕地用的农具。
2)gǔ dài zhǐ gēng dì yòng de nóng jù 。

From today starts Chinese agriculture year: the year of the Monkey. So the monkey topic is very hot in China and the whole world, as well as the story: Journey to the west.

“Journey to the west” is a book written by Wu, Cheng’en in Ming dynasty in 16th century. It is one of the four classical Chinese literatures.

In the story, a Buddhist monk Tang Xuanzang in Tang dynasty traveled to the western region (India) in order to obtain sacred texts (sūtras). But the journey was difficult and with much suffering. So the Buddha provided him with four protectors: Sun Wukong (a monkey), Zhu Wuneng (a pig), Sha Wujin (a water buffalo) and a white horse.

This book has been adopted into TV series for many times. The version from 1986 is the most popular one. These series have influenced a whole generation. Nearly on every summer holidays, when the children stay at home escaping from the hotness, the series have brought them so much fun. The actor of the Monkey, Liuxiaolingtong, and his family are specialized on playing monkeys for four generations. Let’s have a look at the actor today, is he still as fit as in the series? Here is his new year’s performance.

中国农历新年即将到来，但今年的生肖却让西方人感到非常困惑: 到底是山羊还是绵羊？
The western countries and the media are getting confused with the zodiac animal sign of upcoming Chinese Lunar Year: goat or sheep ?

中国农历以十二年为周期，每年以一种动物作为象征。十二生肖中的第八个生肖是“羊”，而这个字在没有修饰限定语的情况下可指山羊或者绵羊。The Chinese lunar calendar assigns an animal symbol to each year in every 12-year cycle. Yet the Chinese character for the eighth zodiac animal is “Y á ng羊”, which can refer to either of the two animals.

查現存記述十二生肖的古籍，最古的是東漢王充《論衡．物勢》：「未禽，羊也。」沒有說是山羊還是綿羊。
The oldest book which describes the 12 zodiac signs has been written by Wang Chong from the Eastern Han Dynasty. Neither Goat or Sheep but “Y á ng羊” is mentioned.

宋朝朱熹《讀十二辰詩卷掇其餘作此聊奉一笑》詩提到羊的一句是「烹羊酤酒聊從容」，指的顯然是肉味甘美的綿羊。
In Song Dynasty, Zhuxi mentioned Yang in one of his poems, which refers obviously to the delicious Sheep.

中国生肖邮票和剪纸上羊的形象往往都是带胡须的山羊。而惨遭洗劫的圆明园生肖喷泉一部分的青铜羊首复制品，也是山羊头。
Images on China’s zodiac stamps and paper cuttings are often bearded goats. The replica of the Yang bronze statue that once formed part of a zodiac fountain in the looted Old Summer Palace also has a goat head.

中国民俗学家表示，羊年生肖的象征物既可能是绵羊，也可能是山羊，但山羊的可能性更大，因为在汉族地区山羊作为家畜更为常见。Chinese folklorists say the animal symbol can be either a sheep or a goat but more likely goat, given the latter’s popularity as a farm animal among Han Chinese.

我们到底该怎么叫？— 羊年！

An dieser Stelle möchte ich mal wieder ein kleines, aber nützliches Tool zum Chinesisch lernen am Computer vorstellen:
Perapera Chinese Popup Dictionary. Dieses Firefox-Plugin zeigt beim Überfahren eines chinesischen Schriftzeichens mit der Maus Hinweise zur Übersetzung, Bedeutung und Aussprache. Es gibt deutsche, englische und französische Wörterbücher als Zielsprache. Außerdem werden Pinyin und Zhuyin, sowie “Simplified” und “Traditional” Zeichen unterstützt. Darüberhinaus kann man einzelne Wörter für ein späteres Lernen sichern und exportieren.
Da das Ganze als Firefox-Plugin realisiert ist, ist es auch plattformunabhängig, d.h. es läuft unter MacOS, Windows und Linux.
Fehlt eigentlich nur noch eine direkte Schnittstelle zu Anki 😉
